Recycling of iron foundry sand and glass waste as raw material for production of whiteware

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the production feasibility of triaxial whiteware using sand from cast iron moulds as a raw material instead of silica, and recycled glass in place of feldspar. Formulations were prepared using sand, glass waste, and white-firing clay such that only 50% of the composition was virgin material (clay). The ceramic bodies were formed by pressing and fired at different temperatures (between 1100 and 1300 degrees C). Specimens were characterized in terms of green density prio… Show more

“…To date, SFSs have been successfully been used as aggregate replacement in asphalt [9,10], highway subbases [11], ceramic materials [12,13], manufactured soils [8,14], retaining walls [15], concrete [16,17], highway embankments [18], controlled low-strength materials [19,20], and flowable slurry [21,22].…”

“…There are a lot of examples in literature, such as the recycling of iron foundry sand, waste glass, waste from mineral processing, and so on [1][2][3][4] . By recycling one can reduce the environmental impact of traditional materials exploration, the environmental damages caused by incorrect administration of the tailings, and the risk of environmental accidents whenever residues are stored improperly.…”
