Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis with pulmonary involvement: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a viral infection that usually affects the upper airways. Although it can spread throughout the respiratory tract, involvement of the lung parenchyma is quite rare. Radiographic images of RRP with lung involvement have been mainly presented in case reports of paediatric patients. “…Papillomaviruses are ubiquitous human commensals, but also cause diseases of the skin, genital tract, and respiratory tract (24). HPV infections in the airways can lead to recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), which in rare cases leads to cysts in the lung itself, especially in the lower lobes (25). Papillomaviruses were detected in lung carcinomas in several studies (26), but causal associations have not been determined.…”

“…1 As clearly reported in this publication the gold standard for empyema treatment is still debated. Several approaches have been proposed: chest tube insertion with subsequent instillation of fibrinolytic agents, minimally invasive surgery with debridement and coagulation of pleural adhesions, and open surgical toilette of the pleural cavity with extended decortication of a trapped lung.…”

“…We have read with great interest the case reported by Ruan et al 1 that describes a 29-year-old man who was admitted with dyspnoea and hoarseness. The patient had a history of laryngeal papillomatosis that was diagnosed when he was 5 years old.…”
