“…The complement fixation titre to herpes simplex also remained low in our patient, but the lesions primarily occurred at the site of previous recurrent herpes simplex infec tions and fortunately responded to topical applications of 5'-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide. As in case 4, the occurrence of prolonged atypical herpes simplex infections in patients receiving steroids or immuno-suppressive drugs has been noted by Stroud [1961] and Park et al [1967], Montgomerie et al [1969] described severe herpes simplex infections in 4 patients who died after receiving renal transplants. One patient died as a result of herpetic lesions involving the face, mouth, oeso phagus, ileum and ano-genital areas, whilst in the other three cases the herpes simplex infection was an important factor contributing to death.…”
