“…Increased metabolic activity in the basal ganglia of Parkinson's disease patients can be reversed by the administration of levodopa (Feigin et al, 2001). Of note, IFN-a has been associated with the development of Parkinson-like symptoms that were relieved by levodopa administration (Bersano et al, 2008). Using fMRI, typhoid vaccination was also found to alter activation in the basal ganglia.…”

“…Indeed, administration of L-DOPA has been shown to reduce glucose metabolism in Parkinson's disease, notably in the putamen, in association with improvement in symptoms (Feigin et al, 2001). Of relevance in this regard, there is a case report of an IFN-α-treated patient who developed Parkinson-like symptoms that were relieved by L-DOPA (Bersano et al, 2008). These data suggest that administration of inflammatory stimuli like IFN-α leads to a state of decreased dopamine function that in turn results in changes in metabolic activity in relevant basal ganglia nuclei similar to that seen in Parkinson's disease.…”

“…The association between IFN-α use and Parkinsonism was first described by Mizoi et al 12 in 1997. Subsequent reports have shown that this complication can also result from treatment with Peg-IFN 15 . Here, we describe the first case of Peg-IFN-induced Parkinsonism in Brazil.…”

“…Data in the literature suggest that the average time for the appearance of Parkinsonism symptoms is variable and can be as long as 30 weeks after the initiation of therapy with interferon [12][13][14][15] . In all reported cases, the Parkinsonism symptoms persisted after discontinuation of interferon and there was partial improvement after treatment with levodopa, indicating a need for continued pharmacological treatment, as in our case.…”
