In production, an intelligent analysis of the data provided along the production line bears huge potential for increasing process efficiency and reducing production costs. The (continuous) collection of relevant data is a crucial precondition for every Industry 4.0 or smart technology. While new machines have internal controllers and sensors to meet those requirements, this is usually not the case for machines being already in use. Especially in the textile industry, it is often standard to keep old machines since the manufacturing methods themselves haven't changed significantly over the past decades. Hence, the successful exploitation of digitalization advantages requires these companies to first develop and implement a digitization strategy. In this paper we present a concept which allows to develop modular, scalable, flexible solutions considering the whole digitization process from data acquisition to storage. The concept is complemented by a guideline for its application in industry. Experience from a prototypical application in a textile company is described. The concept enables companies to determine the various conditions and requirements for digitization, to analyze different possibilities and to deduce scenarios that lead to a solution for the effective utilization of Industry 4.0 technologies.

To compete in the current volatile and unpredictable context, manufacturing firms increasingly need reconfigurability, i.e. the capability to adapt the production capacities and functionalities of their manufacturing systems according to evolving product families. To be attractive for practitioners, reconfigurability should require a reasonably low effort. In 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak has quickly twisted market requirements: in an unexpected market context, many firms have been reconfiguring their plants and networks to satisfy, with low efforts, the surge in the demand for very specific products. This paper analyses the reaction upheld by specific Italian manufacturing firms to the outbreak, to derive practical insights on possible ways to achieve reconfigurability in manufacturing. As for results, four insights are provided, regarding: the pre-existing know how held by firms; their network configuration; the modularity of products; and the use of smart and digital technologies. Additionally, remarking the relevance of collaboration between different firms, this paper sows the seeds for linking the reconfigurability theory with the dynamic capabilities theory.

PurposeThe objective of this study is to propose a sequence of implementation of the core characteristics of reconfigurability: modularity, integrability, diagnosability, adaptability and customization. For this purpose, the relationships among the core characteristics and Industry 4.0 technologies are analyzed as well as the impacts of one core characteristic on another.Design/methodology/approachThis study presented tests and validated two hypothesized models based on the literature. This paper was based on a questionnaire survey. Portuguese manufacturing companies were the sampling frame. In total, 600 questionnaires were distributed and a total of 112 responses were eligible for statistical processing, representing a response rate of 18.7%. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to hypothesize the sequence of implementation of the core characteristics of reconfigurability.FindingsThe findings presented a roadmap to implement reconfigurability, which implies significant managerial contributions on how to make the transition from conventional to reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs). This highlights the importance of the sequence of implementation of the core characteristics in order to make the most of each to achieve reconfigurability.Originality/valueImplementing reconfigurability is crucial to manufacturing companies to respond to changes in production requirements and market fluctuations quickly. However, there is a gap between theory and practice in regard to achieve reconfigurability in existing manufacturing systems. This gap includes (1) understanding the type of relationships among the core characteristics of reconfigurability, (2) understanding the influence that one core characteristic has on another and (3) establishing a sequence of implementation for the core characteristics. This study makes a contribution to fill this gap in the research area.
