Recent Advances of Circular RNAs as Biomarkers for Osteosarcoma

Abstract: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in young adult, which is prone to early metastasis and poor prognosis. The current treatment methods need to be improved. Circular RNA is a covalently blocked circular, non-coding RNA that plays an essential role in the occurrence, development, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases. Recently, an increasing number of circRNAs have been identified in osteosarcoma. Understanding its role in osteosarcoma is conducive to the early detectio… Show more

“…Furthermore, tumor cells often utilize exosomes, robust components of intercellular communication, to improve their growth ( 16 , 18 ). Hence, exosome-derived biomarkers show tremendous promise and have been adopted in scientific research and clinics ( 16 , 18 20 ).…”

“…Given the increasing potential clinical application of circRNAs in cancer as biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets, it might be a fruitful work to study the oncogenic role of these molecules in osteosarcoma. However, the research in this field is still relatively limited, compared to other tumors 150 . Several circRNAs reported in this review such as hsa_circ_0006766, circRNA_0001795, circPVT1, circRNA_0016624, circRNA_0048211, hsa_circ_0006215, circ_0006873, circRUNX2, hsa_circ_0006215, circ_0019693, hsa_circ_0006859, circ_0003865, hsa_circ_0076906 have been reported as involved in osteoporosis occurrence 9 , 49 , 77 - 79 , 90 , 112 , 123 , 125 , 127 , 154 , 155 .…”

“…Indeed, to the best of our knowledge, a few circRNAs including circRNA-28313, circRNA_009934, circ_ 0008542 and circ_0021739 have been reported as human osteoclastogenesis players [145][146][147][148]. Similarly, the knowledge behind the implication of dysregulated circRNAs in the initiation and progression of human bone diseases [149], such as osteosarcoma, osteoporosis and osteonecrosis is still in its early phases [150][151][152][153]. Given the increasing potential clinical application of circRNAs in cancer as biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets, it might be a fruitful work to study the oncogenic role of these molecules in osteosarcoma.…”

“…Table 4 showcases some of the different types of non-coding RNA expressed in higher quantities in osteosarcoma. [41,67] Role of various types of non-coding RNAs in the different stages of osteosarcoma biology. circRNA = circular RNA, CSC = cancer Stem Cell, lncRNA = long non-coding RNA, miR = microRNA, and RNA = ribonucleic acid.…”
