This work aims to evaluate the phytoseiid fauna in natural environments of the coastal plain of the northern coast of the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The plants were sampled from locations within the counties of Tramandaí and Osório during the last month of each season. Three locations were chosen in the Tramandaí area: (A1) -sand dunes; (A2) -mangrove and (A3) -forest plantation; and one in Osório: (A4) -hill with dense rainforest. A total of 561 specimens belonging to 29 species were collected. The preserved areas presented higher richness, given that the A4 area stood out as the richest, with 18 species, and A1 presented the lowest richness, with four species. The most abundant genus was Amblyseius, with five species, followed by Neoseiulus and Iphiseiodes, with three species. A redescription of Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) ornatus and a key for the species in this paper are provided.

The solitary endoparasitoid Aenasius vexans Kerrich (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is used for augmentative releases against the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus herreni Cox & Williams (Sternorrhyncha: Pseudococcidae), an important pest on cassava in South America. In light of the need for large numbers of high quality females, experiments were conducted on host stage suitability and sex allocation. In choice and no-choice experiments, individual female wasps were offered second and third instar, as well as adult, hosts. During the first five days after emergence, the wasps showed a steady increase in the number of hosts they successfully parasitised per day, but the respective secondary sex ratio for each instar remained constant. Parasitism was highest for third instar hosts in no-choice tests, while in choice tests parasitism was highest in both third instars and adults. The later the developmental stage of the host at oviposition, the faster the parasitoids developed and emerged, and for each host stage, the development time of males was shorter than for females. The sex ratio of the wasps emerging from hosts that were parasitised as second instars was strongly male-biased, while the apparently preferred later stages yielded significantly more females than males. Female and male A. vexans emerging from hosts parasitised at the third instar were significantly larger than for the other stages. This may explain the preference for the third instar as well as the female-biased sex ratio, as size is usually positively correlated with higher fitness, especially in females. The results suggest that third instar hosts are the most suitable for rearing high numbers of large females.

-The objective of this study was to verify the reproductive compatibility between populations of Euseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma, to ascertain that they belonged to the same species. The individuals collected in the field were identified as E. citrifolius based on morphological characters. Populations were collected from Bauhinia sp. in Arroio do Meio -RS, Coffea arabica L. in Campinas -SP and Terminalia catappa L. in Petrolina -PE, Brazil. Homogamic and heterogamic crosses and backcrosses were conducted to evaluate reproduction for a period of 10 days. Oviposition rates in homogamic crosses were generally higher than in heterogamic crosses. Partial incompatibility was observed in heterogamic crosses involving females from Petrolina; they did not produce offspring when backcrossed with males of parental populations. This apparent incompatibility can be due to intrinsic characteristics represented by difference in genomic population. So, the populations studied belong to the same species, and the gene flow can occur between populations from Petrolina and Arroio do Meio, as well as between populations from Campinas and Petrolina. Study for detection of Wolbachia and molecular characterization of this populations may be a good tool for the understanding of incompatibility results.KEY WORDS: Biological control, mite, phytoseiid, predator RESUMO -O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a compatibilidade reprodutiva entre algumas populações de Euseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma, para comprovação de que pertencem a uma mesma espécie. Os exemplares coletados em campo foram identificados como E. citrifolius com base em caracteres morfológicos. As populações foram coletadas de Bauhinia sp. em Arroio do Meio -RS, Coffea arabica L. em Campinas -SP e Terminalia catappa L. em Petrolina -PE. Cruzamentos e retrocruzamentos foram realizados para avaliar a reprodução destes ácaros durante um período de dez dias. Os níveis de oviposição nos cruzamentos homogâmicos foram maiores que nos cruzamentos heterogâmicos. Observou-se incompatibilidade reprodutiva parcial nos cruzamentos heterogâmicos envolvendo fêmeas de Petrolina; elas não produziram descendentes quando retrocruzadas com indivíduos das populações parentais. Essa incompatibilidade aparente pode ter-se devido às características intrínsecas representadas por diferenças no genoma das populações. As populações estudadas pertencem, pois, à uma mesma espécie, e o fluxo gênico pode ocorrer entre as populações de Petrolina e Arroio do Meio e de Campinas e Petrolina. Estudos para detecção de Wolbachia e de caracterização molecular dessas populações poderão fornecer informações que auxiliem no entendimento das incompatibilidades.
