Realization of Free‐Space Long‐Distance Self‐Healing Bessel Beams

Abstract: A new approach for generating long‐distance self‐healing Bessel beams, which is based on a ring‐shaped (annular) lens and a spherical lens in 4f‐configuration, is reported. With this, diffraction‐free light evolution of a zeroth order Bessel beam over several meters is shown and available scaling opportunities that surpass current technologies by far are discussed. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how this setup can be adapted to create Bessel beam superpositions, realizing the longest ever reported optical con… Show more

“…Generation of Bessel beams in free space reaching, to the best of our knowledge, diffraction-free propagation distances of several meters at optical wavelength, as reported in Ref. 18 . The key optical component used, is a ring-lens which resembles a cylindrical lens that is morphed to a closed ring-like form.…”

“…As in Refs. 5,18 , the key point is the creation of a bright ring-shaped beam with a large ring radius-to-width ratio, which is subsequently Fourier-transformed by a thin lens. However, in contrast to previous works, our approach is entirely based on linear singular optics.…”

“…A novel method for creating long-distance self-recovering BBs generated by an annular lens and a 4f-configuration spherical lens is stated in [ 121 ]. This shows the diffraction-free light evolution of a zeroth-order BBs over several meters and addresses the available scaling prospects that exceed present technologies.…”

“…Further, while the distance in the laboratory was negligible, PVs have been collimated and sent over a free‐space communication link, [ 34 ] while their Fourier transformed state (Bessel beams) are likewise viable for long distance communication. [ 35,36 ] As such, real‐world deployment of our approach is feasible with appropriate engineering.…”
