Rare earth distribution and its correlation with clay mineralogy in the clay-sized fraction of Cretaceous and Pliocene sediments (central Portugal)

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The REE contents in the clay-sized fractions of nineteen Cretaceous and Pliocene continental sediments, Portugal, were found to be correlated with kaolinite. No correlation is apparent between clay mineralogy and La/Lu or Eu/Sm ratios. The Eu anomaly is generally smaller (or even absent) in the clay-sized fraction than in the corresponding whole sediment, probably due to a greater ability of the clay minerals to accommodate Eu (as Eu 2+) rather than the other REE released during weathering. It is well … Show more

“…The REE are released from primary minerals and taken up by the secondary phases during kaolinization. The REE are leached by local meteoric waters from the upper levels of the profiles and concentrated in deeper zones, probably in the form of complexes, or by mechanical transport of secondary phases (clay minerals and oxides) (cf., Prudencio et al, 1989). However, Ce has a different behavior, as it may be partly oxidized to Ce 4+ , which is retained in the upper levels of the soil profile relative to the other trivalent REE.…”

“…This accounts for the observed negative Ce anomalies displayed in the Buwambo kaolin samples. Although kaolinite accommodates the REE (Prudencio et al, 1989), and particularly the LREE (Nesbitt, 1979), a basic pH environment is also known to fractionate LREE-HREE, as the HREE are preferentially retained in solution, where they form soluble complexes (Cantrell and Byrne, 1987).…”

“…These factors may influence the REE geochemistry of the soils. Prudencio et al (1989) inferred that REEs are adsorbed more readily onto kaolinite than other clay minerals. Under acidic conditions, kaolinite dissolution is enhanced by the formation of complexes between Al and humic substances (Viers et al 1997).…”
