Abstract: SummaryElectrical synapses between interneurons contribute to synchronized firing and network oscillations in the brain. However, little is known about how such networks respond to excitatory synaptic input. To investigate this, we studied electrically coupled Golgi cells (GoC) in the cerebellar input layer. We show with immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and electrophysiology that Connexin-36 is necessary for functional gap junctions (GJs) between GoC dendrites. In the absence of coincident synaptic i… Show more

“…A total of 73 ± 6% of Cx36 immunolabeling colocalized with PV-positive immunolabeling whereas a smaller percentage of Cx36 puncta, 12 ± 6%, colocalized with CB-positive structures. The remaining Cx36 staining, 27 ± 6%, did not colocalize with PV and may be related to Cx36 expression in the dendrites of Golgi cells (12,13) and on MLIs that do not express PV. Thus, the majority of Cx36 puncta in the inner molecular layer were located on PV-positive MLIs.…”

Sagittal slices (200 μm thick) were prepared from the cerebellar vermis of Sprague-Dawley rats [postnatal day (PN) [12][13][14][15][16][17] or C57BL/6J wild-type mice (PN 10-13) or Cx36 −/− mice (PN 10-13). Rats or mice of either sex were decapitated before removal of the cerebellum.…”

“…It may allow rapid movements of electrolytes and current between them. Electrical synapses between interneurons have been reported to contribute to synchronized firing and network oscillations in the brain (Vervaeke et al, 2010). In the bushy cells of the cochlear nucleus Chanda and Xu-Friedman (2010) have shown that the activation of GABAergic receptors adjust the function of these cells by suppressing the relaying of individual inputs and requiring the coincident activity of multiple inputs.…”

“…the precise synchronization of neuronal populations with differing feature preferences thereby providing a temporal frame for the generation of distributed representations." Such gap junction linked networks can either promote network synchronization, or trigger rapid network desynchronization, depending on the synaptic input (Vervaeke et al, 2010). This network may promote complex oscillatory interactions of the whole system.…”
