Rapid Adsorption of Crystal Violet onto Magnetic Zeolite Synthesized from Fly Ash and Magnetite Nanoparticles

Abstract: This work reports the adsorption of crystal violet (CV) dye onto magnetic zeolite (MZ) nanoparticles, synthesized by direct fusion of fly ash (FA) and magnetite particles. The synthesised MZ showed high capacity for CV dye adsorption, removing 95% of the dye at an equilibrium adsorption time of 10 min and 25˚C. The effects of adsorbent dosage, dye concentration, and pH, on adsorption were evaluated. Adsorption data were best described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm (R 2 = 0.9986), while the adsorption kin… Show more

“…In recent years, there has been growing interest in the search for cheaper sources, such as low-cost adsorbent materials, for the immobilization of dyes and heavy metals from mixtures [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. For this reason, there are studies on the utilization of this solid waste [18][19][20][21][22] for the removal of heavy metals [23][24][25] and dyes [26][27][28] from polluted waters.…”

“…It is a typical cationic dye that has been widely used as a colorant in textile products. Incrustation is the most visible effect of wastewater discharge from the textile industry [28,30]. The distribution of compounds containing Cr(III) and Cr(VI) depends on the redox potential.…”

“…Rhodamine B (RB) is a highly water-soluble, basic red dye of the xanthene class [3]. It is a typical cationic dye that has been widely used as a colorant in textile products [7]. The most visible effect of wastewater discharge from the textile industry is incrustation, which reduces light penetration into the water and can adversely affect marine life [7,8].…”

The most visible effect of wastewater discharge from the textile industry is incrustation, which reduces light penetration into the water and can adversely affect marine life [7,8]. Rhodamine B is used as the active medium in pulsed and continuous wave lasers, as a staining fluorescent dye in biology, and as a tracer dye to track the movement of water.…”

“…CV encapsulation and entrapment in matrices such as particles made of acrylamide and acrylates derivatives or in magnetic zeolite nanoparticles and in sol-gel silica clusters were reported [9,11,12]. However, the mentioned systems are requiring chemical synthetic precursors (i.e., acrylamide, tetraethoxysilane) or materials produced by coal combustion (i.e., fly ash) which are not environmentally friendly.…”
