Range for Normal Body Temperature in Hemodialysis Patients and Its Comparison with That of Healthy Individuals

Abstract: Background/Aims: Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis have an altered homeostasis leading to altered body temperatures. We aimed to determine the range for normal body temperature in hemodialysis patients and compared it to healthy individuals. Also, we determined how much axillary temperatures differed from oral temperatures in both groups and whether axillary temperature is affected by the presence of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Oral and axillary … Show more

“…Besides, body temperature should be carefully measured before and after the bath/Hammam visit. Because dialysis patients have a disturbed temperature regulation, they are at higher risk to develop hyperthermia. No cases of skin burns were observed, and only eight out of 208 stimulated sweating sessions (3.8%) led to a body temperature >38.0°C, all in the same patient who did not follow the instruction to lower the temperature of bathing water when a body temperature >38°C was measured the first time, because he had no side effects.…”

“…Bacteremic patients with reduced renal function have been found to have a blunted febrile response compared to those with preserved renal function; however, patients receiving dialysis and/or having "rapid fluctuation of serum creatinine levels" were notably omitted from the study [3]. More recent evidence suggests that hemodialysis patients have higher basal temperatures compared to healthy controls [4], raising the possibility of dialyzed patients reaching higher maximum temperatures during episodes of infection than their nondialyzed counterparts.…”

“…The precise mechanisms of action of hypothermia for neurological protection are largely unknown (Polderman, 2008a). during the course of each day (Hasan, 2010). Central body temperature is thought to be under hypothalamic control.…”
