Abstract: Imagery of the world's major tropical rain forests gathered from data collected by the Japanese JERS‐1 satellite is now being released on CD‐ROMs. Begun in 1995, the Global Rain Forest Mapping (GRFM) project has collected contiguous, high‐resolution L‐band imagery of rain forests in Central and South America, central and west Africa, Southeast Asia, and northern Australia (Figure 1).
