Radioprotective profile of Urtica dioica L. seed extract on oxidative DNA-damage in liver tissue and whole blood of radiation-administered rats

Abstract: It was aimed to investigate the radioprotective activity of Urtica dioica L. seed extract (UDSE) in the whole blood and liver of radiation-administered rats, both biochemically and immunohistochemically. 32 rats were divided into 4 groups (n:8). Control group (C): no administration for 10 days. Radiation group (IR): fed pellets for 10 days after exposure to radiation. Radiation + UDSE (IR+UDSE) group: exposed to radiation and fed UDSE for 10 days. UDSE group (UDSE): fed UDSE for 10 days. Radiation (5Gy) was gi… Show more

“…45 Pasupathi et al 46 48 This result may be due to great consumption of the antioxidant system to cover the free radicals produced by radiation. 49 Generally, imbalance between the content of pro-inflammatory mediators (eg, IL-1β, TNF-α, leptin) and anti-inflammatory mediators (eg, IL-10, adiponectin) generates inflammation process. 50 The rule of immune/inflammatory system is essential for keeping the equilibrium between protective and tissue-damaging responses.…”

“…On the other hand, antioxidant defense system capacity of the irradiated liver has decreased as a result of decreased hepatic GSH level as well as hepatic GSH-PX and SOD activities which are considered as strong liver antioxidants. Our results go hand in hand with Cheng et al [12,[25][26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…Our results go hand in hand with previous studies [12,[26][27][28][29][30], as a consequence of oxidative stress and inflammation of hepatic tissues, liver impairment and injury occurred and resulted in tissue degeneration resulting in increased liver's operational functioning enzymes (ALT, AST, and y-GT) in serum. That progressed into gallbladder disease indicated by increased ALP activity associated with jaundice (increased bilirubin level).…”
