Abstract: Uranium‐series dating of derived speleothem suggests that the sediments enclosing a Middle Palaeolithic stone artefact assemblage in Pin Hole Cave probably accumulated after about 64 ka, and 14C dates indicate a likely age of > 40 ka for the large mammal fauna associated with it. Electron spin resonance data from the fauna conform with these age constraints and are consistent with accumulation between 38 and 50 ka. This evidence supports the view that Britain was recolonised by hominids during Oxygen Isotope S… Show more

“…The age of the fauna is also particularly well constrained by a combination of Uranium-series, ESR, and radiocarbon dates. These are consistent with accumulation during the interval 50-38 ka (Jacobi et al, 1998).…”

“…However, these dates are likely to be anomalously young, as demonstrated by bone remains on carbonate geology elsewhere (Jacobi et al, 1998;Hedges and Millard, 1995). Furthermore, improved analytical techniques (ultrafiltration) have recently resulted in revised 14 C ages for Pleistocene faunal remains from the UK (Higham et al, 2006), casting further doubt on the radiocarbon ages of the Inchnadamph bones.…”

“…However, information derived from breakrefits of artefacts suggests that there may have existed an area of syndepositional subsidence, perhaps due to the presence of small fissures (sinks) in the bed-rock floor. This was centred on a point about 12.8 m in from the entrance (Jacobi et al, 1998).…”
