Radial variations of wood properties in Casuarina equisetifolia growing in Bangladesh

Abstract: Radial variations of wood properties (basic density, fi ber length, vessel element length, and compression strength) in plantation-grown Casuarina equisetifolia in Bangladesh were investigated for effective utilization of the wood. Samples disks at breast height were randomly collected from trees in a 10-year-old plantation in Cox's Bazar Forest Division, Bangladesh. The basic density showed a near-constant value up to 30 mm from the pith and then rapidly increased up to 60 mm from the pith. The fi ber length … Show more

“…The wood density was demonstrated to be a very important factor accounting for the radial variation of bonding strength. Similar significant correlations were found between air-dried density and the compression strength parallel to the grain of Casuarina equisetifolia (Chowdhury et al 2009), as well as between the wood density obtained from soft X-ray analysis with Young's modulus and strength in static bending, compressive Young's modulus, compressive strength, and compressive proportional limit (Kubojima et al 2008).…”

“…Thus, MOE and MOR values for the 10th and 30th annual rings from the pith were estimated from the logarithmic formula fitted to the radial variation of MOE and MOR in each tree. The annual ring numbers of the specimens were estimated from the radial variations of annual ring width 33 according to the method described in our previous reports 39 41 .…”

“… Casuarina equisetifolia Forst. is used as an industrial raw material and wood fuel, as well as for conservation of coastal ecosystems and for agricultural land protection against salinity intrusion ( Hossain et al 1998 ; Chowdhury et al 2009 ). In China, Casuarina equisetifolia is widely planted in the coastal areas of Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Taiwan provinces.…”
