Abstract: The primary and secondary feathers of 170 Brazilian psittacine birds (Aves: Psittaciformes) were examined in order to identify feather quill mite fauna. Birds were held captive in two locations in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), and two in the state of Espirito Santo (ES). The quills were cut longitudinally and were examined under optical microscopy. The genus of quill mites most frequently found was Paralgopsis (Astigmata: Pyrogliphidae), followed by Cystoidosoma (Astigmata: Syringobiidae). Astigmata: Syringo… Show more

“…Passos, Unaí and Uberaba regions had no infestation, leading to their exclusion from the model. Differences in the occurrence of feather mites among regions were also described by Jardim et al (2012), in a study on the occurrence of quill mites on psittacines in conservation facilities in Brazil, observing a greater chance of occurrence in the State of Espírito Santo as compared to Minas Gerais. The occurrence of variations among regions could be attributed to climatic conditions, which would vary according to geographic location.…”

“…Paralgopsis had previously been recorded only from inside the quills of psittaciform birds (Gaud 1968b;Jardim et al 2012), and our record of this genus on a galliform could be the result of contamination, because it was collected from a captive bird. However, information about feather mites from this bird species is scarce in Brazil and requires further investigation.…”
