RESUMO: O presente trabalho tenta mostrar como na justifi cação teórica do estudo do movimento naturalmente acelerado nos Discurso s, Galileu combinaria três posturas metodológicas não perfeitamente coinciden tes. Seriam elas: a demonstração ex hy po thesi da tradição astronômica, in terpretada realistamente; a demonstração necessária da tradição aristotélico-euclidiana; a demonstração t(pica das "c iências in ter mediárias ': Assim, mesmo a última obra de Galileu estaria longe de ser inequ(voca em matéria de metodo logia cient(fica.UNITER MOS: Galileu; Discursos; movimento naturalmente acelerado; raciocfnio ex hypothesi; Aris tóteles; Euclides; ciências intermediárias; ótica.Muito se tem discutido sobre as concep ções científicas e metodológicas de Galileu. Ta lvez boa parte dos desacordos provenha de dois fatores. O primeiro seria a inten ção de ler Galileu retrospectivamente, isto é, a intenção de descobrir nele os germes do que vai ser a ciência posteriormente. Di to melhor: lê-lo a partir de um estágio pos terior da ciência. O segundo seria a preten são de atribuir a Galileu uma coerência ir refragável, seja dentro da mesma obra, se ja ao longo de sua extensa produção inte lectual.Propomo-no neste trabalho, seguir um caminho inverso. Quer dizer, em primeiro lugar, ler Galileu prospectivamente, isto é, a partir do que ele podia conhecer, tentan do ele, eventualmente, ultrapassar o que po dia conhecer. Além disso, lê-lo sem supor que seja sempre coerente, mesmo na mes ma obra e na mesma passagem de tal obra. Parece-nos que esta postura consegue dar conta razoavelmente de certas dificuldades ou ambiguidades encontradas nos Discur sos. Com efeito, encontrar-se-iam aproximadas nestas diferentes tradições de 'pen samento sem que se possa dizer que a sín tese destas seja perfeita ou sem percalços. Em primeiro lugar convém inves tigar e explicar a definição que lhe cai ba exatamente enquanto se encontra na natureza. Pois, embora não haja incon veniente em imaginar arbitrariamente alguma espécie de movimento e exami nar as propriedades que dela decorrem -assim, com efeito, procedem os que se imaginam linhas helicoidais ou concói des resultantes de certos movimentos, embora estes não se encontrem na na tureza e, louvavelmente, demonstraram hipoteticamente as propriedades de tais
