Abstract: In this paper we investigate a hybrid quantum system comprising a mechanical oscillator coupled via magnetic induced electromotive force to an LC resonator. We derive the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian for this system and find that the interaction can be described by a charge-momentum coupling with a strength that has a strong geometry dependence. We focus our study on a mechanical resonator with a thin-film magnetic coating which interacts with a nanofabricated planar coil. We determine that the coupling rate bet… Show more

“…However, the work ended up yielding a formula that is unequal to the well-known magnetic force law. Another attempt used Quantum Physics to explain magnetism by virtual photons, i.e., infinitesimal imaginary particles interacting with each other at a distance [13]- [17]. These photons create electric and magnetic fields that are responsible for the interaction between charged objects.…”

“…This indicates that the divergence of the associated magnetic field is zero, consequently. By applying the divergence operation on the magnetic field as defined in equation (12), equation (13) is obtained.…”

“…This view is used to explain the electromagnetic fields and their interaction with charged particles, and to capture information about the generating charges. In the quantum mechanics view, electromagnetic waves are represented by small energy units called photons [33,34,35,36,37]. These photons are electrically neutral, and they are either real or virtual.…”

“…Equation ( 32) is the exact equivalent to the displacement current portion of Maxwell's fourth equation, Ampere's circuital law, in electromagnetic theory for time-varying current. By adding the other portion related to the steady movement of charges and currents, equation ( 32) is rewritten as in equation (33).…”

“…3 where the mechanical degree of freedom modulates the capacitance [37] or inductance [38] of an LC (inductor-capacitor) circuit; dielectrics (including superfluids) suspended or trapped inside rigid cavities, which alter their effective path length [39][40][41][42][43]; polarised spin ensembles [44][45][46] interacting with an optical cavity; and atomic clouds in rigid cavities, where the self-organised atom clouds act as a mirror [47][48][49]. Thus, much of the theory content of this thesis can equally well be translated for use in these alternative physical settings.…”
