Abstract: Purpose:To describe the external load of Australian football matches and training using accelerometers. Methods:Nineteen elite and 21 subelite Australian footballers wore accelerometers during matches and training. Accelerometer data were expressed in 2 ways: from all 3 axes (player load; PL) and from all axes when velocity was below 2 m/s (PLSLOW). Differences were determined between 4 playing positions (midfielders, nomadics, deeps, and ruckmen), 2 playing levels (elite and subelite), and matches and training… Show more

“…Therefore relying solely on GPS metrics to quantify activity demands in these sports may lead to an underestimation of the external load experienced by players (Boyd et al, 2013). In order to fully understand the stress placed on players and accurately estimate external load, valid measurements of activities involving collisions and impacts must be developed.…”

“…The monitoring of eTL measures derived from tri-axial accelerometers is now considered a viable tool in team sports (1,6,35). For instance, Boyd et al (6) described the eTL of Australian football performed in official matches and training sessions, using a tri-axial accelerometer.…”

“…Accelerometers have been reported to have good reliability for the measurement of physical demands (3) and are increasingly used to measure the activity profiles of various team sports (4,5,16). To date, only 1 study has used this technology in netball (6).…”
