Quality of life in patients with Takayasu's arteritis is impaired and comparable with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis patients

Abstract: The aims of the study were to assess the health-related quality of life (QOL) in patients with Takayasu's arteritis (TA) by two different generic QOL instruments and to compare the results with those patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and healthy controls (HC). A cross-sectional study was performed in 51 patients with TA (41 women; mean age 38.4 +/- 13.5), 43 RA (36 women; 55.2 +/- 9.6), 31 AS (12 women; 41.2 +/- 13.1), and 75 HC (53 women; 38.8 +/- 10.9). Quality of life was… Show more

“…Impaired SF-36 scores in TAK patients have been previously demonstrated in two studies (16,17). In another study of our group, we observed that all items of the SF-36 were impaired in the patients with TAK, with lower scores in the active patients (18).…”

“…SF-36 is easy to use, acceptable to patients, and fulWls stringent criteria of reliability and validity [36], and can also distinguish physical HRQOL from mental HRQOL [17,36]. Accordingly, SF-36 has been widely used for the clinical trials in the rheumatologic conditions other than FMF [9,10,37,38]. Akar et al have demonstrated that Takayasu's arteritis patients had signiWcantly lower scores in physical and mental components of SF-36 than control group.…”

“…A number of reports have demonstrated that TA is usually associated with immune disorders, or granulomatous diseases such as granulomatous hypophysitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), etc. (Akar et al, 2008). Concurrent existence of these diseases seems to indicate that the onset of TA may be related to dysregulation of the immune system.…”
