Quality of life in Brazil: normative values for the Whoqol-bref in a southern general population sample

Abstract: Our results can be useful to researchers using the WHOQOL-bref to compare their results with normative data from a randomly selected sample of general population. Additionally, the ability of WHOQOL-bref to discriminate different population subgroups makes it an important tool to identify vulnerable groups in epidemiological surveys.

“…It was observed that the athletes under study obtained higher physical health values than those of the general population aged between 20 and 29 years 19 . These may be due to the possibility that, when planned, regular PA improves physical conditioning, enhances sleep quality and controls the use of medication, when necessary.…”

“…It is important to remember that tennis, paddle, cycling and triathlon were considered individual sports, and that an earlier study in Pelotas involving 3,136 subjects over the age of 20 years reported that less than 1% of the population played tennis 27 ; the other sports were not included in the study, possibly because they are associated with higher socioeconomic levels and require the use of specific venues and costly equipment. Thus, it is likely that other factors not assessed, such as economic status and schooling level, are associated with the higher environmental domain 19 . Correlations were found between the domains and overall score, but the WHOQOL-bref results were not correlated with time engaged in the sport or number and duration of weekly training sessions.…”

“…Considering that the population of the present investigation is allocated between two age group proposed (30-44 years and 45-64 years), the physical domain presents respectively 57.9 ± 10,5 points and 59.2 ± 10.2 points, the psychological 62.5 ± 12.4 points and 63 ± 12.3 points, social relations 68.9 ± 21,7 points and 72.7 ± 17.3 points and ending the domain of environment 59.7 ± 15.1 points to the group between 30-44 years and of 62.2 ± 15.9 points to people between 45 and 64 years 27 . e data of the present study are higher compared to all these results and higher compared to B 28 , that analyzed the level of quality of life in the physical exercise practitioners (45-59 years old).…”
