Large-scale water transfer projects can be an important way of mitigating water scarcity and have been adopted worldwide. Nevertheless, investments in massive infrastructure, negative environmental impacts and restrictive legislation have required water managers to adopt new approaches, such as small-scale inter-basin water transfer (SSIWT), especially in industrial and urbanized regions. However, there is a lack of research concerning environmental impact assessments of SSIWT to support decisionmaking, notably in developing countries (such as Brazil). The main goal of this research was to assess the environmental impacts of water transfer on the quality of surface water in the Jundiaí-Mirim river basin, southeast Brazil. Water samples were collected along the Jundiaí-Mirim River in September 2013 (in the absence of SSIWT) and in September 2014 (during SSIWT) for determining the following parameters: pH, temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), chloride (Cl −), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and dissolved and total metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mg and Mn). Descriptive statistics and the paired Student's t-test (p < 0.05) were used to test the hypothesis that there was an effect of SSIWT on water quality. The results showed impacts due to the transfer of ions from the Atibaia River to the Jundiaí-Mirim River, as well as the degradation of riverbanks, which significantly (p < 0.05) influenced DO, TOC, DOC, TN, Cl − , Al, Fe and Mg concentrations. A positive impact on the trophic state was observed due to the increased flow caused by the water transfer, which acted to flush the river and reservoir. The findings provide important information on the environmental performance of small-scale hydraulic operations, which should assist decision-makers in establishing strategies to reduce negative environmental impacts.

Accelerated urbanization in Brazil promoted the rapid growth of cities and, in most cases, was not based on adequate land use planning. The result was the intense fragmentation of the landscape, causing the destruction and fragmentation of forest habitats, which were restricted to small and isolated remnants. In this sense, the present study promoted an analysis of the environmental quality of vegetation fragments in the sub-basins of Ribeirão Anhumas, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil by calculating and interpreting the circularity index (CI), in order to define the format of the fragments, connectivity/ isolation and the use and occupation of the environment as well as area and location, in order to promote the diagnosis and identification of priority areas for the implementation of restoration and environmental management actions. It was identified, therefore, that the remaining vegetation of the upper, middle and lower sub-basins is divided between small and medium unconnected fragments of which 56.2% and 24.2% presented an elongated and moderately elongated shape, respectively, and, therefore, high susceptibility to external interference and edge effects. On the other hand, high urbanization evidenced mainly in the high-level limits forest management projects, since the fragments are surrounded by built areas.

A área de Ciências Ambientais é recente e emergente na pós-graduação brasileira e sua complexidade realça a importância do enfoque interdisciplinar nas dimensões do ensino, da pesquisa e da extensão. Este trabalho apresenta um relato sobre as experiências de gestão acadêmica promotora da interdisciplinaridade no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Ambientais (PPGCA) do Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia de Sorocaba da Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”. Fez-se um levantamento dos efeitos das diretrizes de gestão para a promoção da interdisciplinaridade, no seu contexto acadêmico e social, no período de 2013 a 2015. Alguns desdobramentos dessas diretrizes estão consubstanciados nos eventos para a comunidade interna e externa da universidade, voltados para públicos específicos, como membros da academia, habitantes da região de Sorocaba e estudantes do nível médio e fundamental. As atividades inovadoras do ensino adotadas corresponderam à abordagem construtivista, integração das disciplinas e projeto estruturante. As ações de internacionalização do programa, por sua vez, incluíram o estímulo à vinda de professores visitantes de instituições de ensino e pesquisa internacionais, assim como a participação de professores e alunos do programa em atividades de intercâmbio, estágios de docência e pós-doutoramento. Um reflexo dessas ações foi o aumento relativo da produção bibliográfica interdisciplinar dos docentes e discentes em periódicos qualificados, o qual variou de 3,2%, em 2013, a 41,7%, em 2015. Tais resultados demonstram o fortalecimento do PPGCA, baseado em diretrizes para promover a interdisciplinaridade, podendo fundamentar e subsidiar as discussões de outros programas de pós-graduação do país.
