Quadriceps sarcopenia and visceral obesity are risk factors for postural instability in the middle‐aged to elderly population

Abstract: Thigh Qc sarcopenia and visceral obesity are associated with postural instability in middle-aged to elderly subjects. These findings suggest that age-related, site-specific fat and muscle mass alterations are associated with functional impairment.

“…especially of the knee extensors, has shown to be an important factor for balance control (36,40). Ochi et al (36) investigated the relationship between age-related quadriceps sarcopenia and visceral obesity on postural instability finding an association with postural instability in middle-aged to elderly subjects.…”

“…Ochi et al (36) investigated the relationship between age-related quadriceps sarcopenia and visceral obesity on postural instability finding an association with postural instability in middle-aged to elderly subjects. In this sense, we can conclude that older obese people with low muscle strength have an increased risk of losing their balance and walking ability and experiencing accelerated decline of lower extremity performance (28,41,42).…”

“…Obesity and abdominal adiposity increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, sarcopenic obesity, and functional disability even in the elderly Asian individuals who generally have a lower body mass index (BMI) than European people (Kim et al 2009;Ochi et al 2010;WHO Expert Consultation 2004). Therefore, identifying the determinants of obesity in elderly Asian individuals is important to prevent obesity and to reduce the burden of health care in a rapidly aging society in Asia.…”

“…Some methods of physical therapy, including electrical stimulation (ES), have been used for muscle strengthening. In particular, ES has been adopted to improve not only muscle atrophy but also impaired motor function in hemiplegic patients and spinal cord-injured patients since the 1980s, and its safety and effectiveness have been confi rmed [7][8][9][10][11] . In the present study, we applied surface ES to the abdominal muscles of care-needing elderly people and investigated its effects in motor performance.…”
