Maturity Traits Related to Climate Adaptation Affect Quality Characteristics in Hard Red Spring Wheat

Maturity traits such as days to heading and days to physiological maturity have a large impact on agronomic characteristics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars grown in specific environments. Extended green leaf and green glume duration after heading in hard red spring wheat have been shown to result in longer grain‐fill duration, increased kernel weight, and higher grain yield in dry environments. The genetic relationship between maturity traits, seed quality, and functional bread‐making characteristics was investigated for three sets of recombinant inbred lines derived from crosses between hard red spring wheat parents. Early heading date was correlated with increased seed quality as indicated by test weight and kernel weight in all three genetic populations. Days to heading was not consistently correlated with functional quality related to bread‐baking. Longer green glume and green leaf duration after heading were typically positively related to seed quality traits including test weight and kernel weight in the three populations. However, increased green leaf and green glume duration after heading were often negatively correlated with functional quality parameters related to bread baking. Our results suggest that selection for long green leaf or green glume duration after heading to stabilize grain yield in a warmer climate may also result in a decrease in bread‐making potential.

Sustainable wheat production is challenged by climate change events such as drought, salinity, and heat stress. Senescence is a gradual programmed cell death trait occurring post anthesis in wheat (Triticum aestivum), with significant affecting stability of yield and quality‐related traits under climate severities. Phenotyping of complex traits is increasingly perceived as a bottleneck due to elevated labour costs and time in large field conditions. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based platforms using RGB imagery and ground phenotyping based novel traits can facilitate the repeated non‐destructive measurements of crop canopy traits cost‐effectively. Here, we described combined application of UAV‐based RGB imaging and ground measurements based novel trait to quantify canopy senescence in wheat. We reported senescence related traits with high heritability in a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the cross Zhongmai 175/Lunxuan 987. Our results showed that the selection of slow senescence genotypes using UAV‐based VIs was equally effective as ground‐based traits and illustrated significant variations among the genotypes. We also identified five quantitative trait loci (QTL) for canopy senescence in both UAV and ground‐based data sets using a 50K single‐nucleotide polymorphism array. QTL for UAV‐based VIs from RGB imaging and ground measurements based traits were mapped on chromosomes 1B, 2B, 3A, and 4B. The integration of both data sets with genetic analysis identified an important slow senescence/stay‐green related locus on chromosome 4B that explained phenotypic variation up to 23.07% for both UAV and ground traits at late grain filling stage. Three QTL (QTL‐caas.1B, QTL‐caas.3A, QTL‐caas.4B2) on chromosomes 1B, 3A, and 4B were also validated for slow senescence with high chlorophyll level and cool canopy temperature in a natural population of 160 lines by developing kompetitive allele‐specific PCR markers. QTL‐caas.4B1 was validated not only for senescence but also for plant height. Our findings suggest that UAV‐based RGB imagery is advantageous for precise and rapid assessment of senescence related traits and genetic studies of senescence in wheat.This article is protected by copyright. To achieve malt grade and receive full price, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crops must meet standards for certain quality traits including percent plump and protein. Terminal drought stress reduces quality and is projected to worsen in barley cultivation areas, underscoring the need for varieties that maintain good malt production with unreliable precipitation. The stay‐green trait extends the grain fill phase between heading and maturity and has been linked to stable quality under dry conditions. However, this relationship can be inconsistent and is not well understood. To effectively leverage a longer grain fill phenotype for drought adaptation, a better grasp of its genetics and environmental interaction is needed. Stay‐green root system differences have been observed and could be at play. We performed correlation and quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis on grain fill duration, grain quality, and seminal root traits using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population segregating for stay‐green. Agronomic data were collected in four field trials at two distinct semiarid locations, and roots were measured in a greenhouse assay. Earlier heading and later maturity led to improved quality in both locations and more consistent quality between locations. Earlier heading had a greater influence on quality in the drier environment, while later maturity was more impactful in the less dry environment. We observed co‐locations of seminal root trait QTLs with grain fill duration and grain quality. These QTLs lay the groundwork for further investigation into root phenotypes associated with stay‐green and the deployment of these traits in breeding for drought adaptation.
