QPSK detection using glow discharge detector and a photodiode for millimeter‐wave and terahertz communication

Abstract: The terahertz gap (0.1‐10 THz) is an attractive frequency band for new applications. In wireless communication, it can serve as a high capacity link. The lack in use of that gap exists due to a lack of available commercial communications technology systems in that region. We have found that neon indicator lamps or glow discharge detectors (GDD) can be used as simple and very inexpensive detectors in that frequency gap. In modern modulation techniques, the signal phase should be recovered. This article is a pro… Show more

“…These applications are mostly dependent upon the performance of THz detectors and sources. Several different types of THz detectors have been developed over time 6,7 . THz detectors can be divided into three types based on their detection principles: photon type, 8 thermal radiation type, 9,10 and electronic type.…”

“…Several different types of THz detectors have been developed over time. 6,7 THz detectors can be divided into three types based on their detection principles: photon type, 8 thermal radiation type, 9,10 and electronic type. Compared with the other detectors, electronic detectors are more concerned because of its stronger real-time performance and easier arrayed properties.…”

“…Furthermore, upconversion of MMW power into visual light range using the GDD was demonstrated as well [9]. Operation of GDDs in upconversion mode for MMW coherent detection was also experimentally demonstrated in [23]. Many GDD neon lamps from different vendors were tested and the Gilway N523 was found to be the most responsive of them for electrical detection.…”
