“…Five types of carcinoma have been defined, based on specific histological criteria: giant cell carcinoma, pleomorphic carcinoma, CSA, spindle cell carcinoma, and pulmonary blastoma. Although CSA is generally difficult to diagnose preoperatively due to mixed composition of both epithelial and sarcomatous components, several reports have described preoperative diagnosis at approximate rate of 0% to 12% (7,10). Macroscopically, CSA is www.respircase.com usually gray-white in color, with hemorrhagic and/or necrotic areas (11,12).…”

“…Although sarcomatoid carcinomas are generally difficult to diagnose preoperatively due to their mixed composition of both epithelial and sarcomatous components, several reports have described preoperative diagnosis at an approximate rate of 0-12% [6,9]. While preoperative diagnosis of the sarcomatous components of the lesions was not obtained in any case in two reports [2,9], all of 17 cases were definitively diagnosed by invasive transthoracic needle aspiration in another report [6].…”

“…This location can be central-endobronchial (most often) or peripheral [8,9]. The carcinomatous component relates to the location: squamous carcinoma (91%) in central lung tumours and glandular (50%) in peripheral lung tumours.…”
