Public human microbiome data are dominated by highly developed countries

Abstract: The importance of sampling from globally representative populations has been well established in human genomics. In human microbiome research, however, we lack a full understanding of the global distribution of sampling in research studies. This information is crucial to better understand global patterns of microbiome-associated diseases and to extend the health benefits of this research to all populations. Here, we analyze the country of origin of all 444,829 human microbiome samples that are available from t… Show more

“…Defining the core human microbiome therefore requires sufficient data for different populations. However, According to a recent estimate, more than 70% of human microbiome data deposited in public databases have been collected from Westerners [ 47 ]. Large-scale national and international efforts to study the human microbiome have mostly focused on American and European populations.…”

“…Furthermore, the majority of studies are derived from sample repositories where the US is overrepresented [ 101 ]. As discussed, geography plays a prominent role in diet and lifestyle, affecting microbiome populations.…”

“…International projects, such as The Human Microbiome Project, have been undertaken to characterise the commensal microbiota in distinct anatomical sites of healthy individuals. 3 Although these are still mostly focused on European and North American populations, 6 this has provided better understanding of the complex and varied roles the gut microbiota plays in both health and disease. This review will consider how the gut microbiota develops from early life onwards, its key functions in maintaining gut health and the role of altered gut microbiota in disease.…”
