Over the past few decades, bioenergy production from heavy metalcontaminated biomass (HMCB) has been drawing increasing attention from scientists in diverse disciplines and countries owing to their potential roles in addressing both energy crisis and environmental challenges. In this review, bioenergy recovery from HMCBs, i.e. contaminated plants and energy crops, using thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, and liquefaction) has been scrutinized. 8Nowadays concerns regarding fossil fuel resources depletion as well as environmental issues 9 attributed to CO 2 accumulation in the atmosphere force communities toward utilizing 10 biomass as a substitute fuel source which is environmentally secure and renewable. Pyrolysis 11 bio-oil from biomass comprised varieties of undesirable oxygenate and heavy compounds 12 have to be treated before its feeding to bio-refineries. Catalytic biomass pyrolysis vapor 13 upgrading presently seems to be a techno-economical process toward production of fuel-like 14 components. However, selection of stable and productive catalyst (s) to yield desirable 15 chemicals with low coke formation is a great challenge. Three most important classes of 16 catalysts comprising zeolites, mesoporous catalysts and metal based catalysts are utilized for 17 vapor phase bio-oil upgrading. This study dedicates a comprehensive review on catalytic 18 biomass pyrolysis vapor upgrading by emphasizing particularly on catalyst's types and 19 properties, coke formation over catalysts and catalytic process conditions.20

Abstract:Recently, the catalytic upgrading of bio-oil to renewable diesel has been attracting more and more attention. In the current paper, carbon nanotube (CNT)-supported nickel catalysts, namely, 5% Ni/CNTs, were prepared for liquid hydrocarbon production through the deoxygenation of palmitic acid, the model compound of bio-oil under a mild condition of 240 • C reaction temperature and 2 MPa H 2 pressure. The experimental results revealed that the main reaction product was pentadecane (yield of 89.64%) at an optimum palmitic acid conversion of 97.25% via the hydrodecarbonylation (HDC) process. The deoxygenation mechanism for palmitic acid conversion was also investigated. This study provides technical parameters and a theoretical basis for further industrialization in the bio-oil upgrading process.
