Psychometric validity of the 22‐item Sinonasal Outcome Test

Abstract: We have found the SNOT-22 to be valid and easy to use. It can be used to facilitate routine clinical practice to highlight the impact of chronic rhinosinusitis on the patient's quality of life, and may also be used to measure the outcome of surgical intervention. The minimally important difference allows us to interpret scores in a clinical context, and may help to improve patient selection for surgery.

“…In addition, patients were asked whether systemic medication was needed to control the symptoms, including a course of antibiotics or corticosteroids in the last 3 months, or a need of long‐term antibiotics or corticosteroids in the last month. Based on the scheme in the update on EPOS in 2012, CRS patients were defined as well, partly or not controlled 1.The SNOT‐22 questionnaire is a validated 22‐item questionnaire, which is a disease‐specific, health‐related quality‐of‐life measure for rhinosinusitis 7. The SNOT‐22 questionnaire is based on the SNOT‐20 questionnaire containing 20 nasal, sinus and general items that are scored by the individual patient.…”

“…According to this definition, physicians and other healthcare professionals may describe the health status of each individual, but it is only the patient, individually, who can describe his/her own quality of life 2 . Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), with or without nasal polyps, is a prevalent disease, which can affect up to 14% of the North-American population, and cause a significant impact on quality of life 3 . Such impact may be demonstrated using quality of life questionnaires, such as the SF-36; and patients with CRS have impacts on physical pain and on social aspects which are even greater than patients with angina, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 4 .…”
