Psychometric properties of trunk impairment scale in children with spastic diplegia

Abstract: The Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) is a valid and reliable tool to assess trunk impairment in children with heterogeneous cerebral palsy. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the TIS in assessing children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. The sample was a total of 30 subjects (15 = boys, 15 = girls). All subjects underwent an assessment of the sitting component of the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 and TIS by rater 1. Rater one observed video recordings within 24 h and … Show more

“…The FIST and TIS are performed in a seated position and were therefore deemed appropriate for use on Para dressage athletes. For activity-based deficits and performance relating to sitting balance, the FIST was identified as a reliable measure (Gorman et al, 2014b) as was the TIS (Verheyden et al, 2004) for assessing trunk control (Dasoju et al, 2021). Trunk impairment has been assessed in wheelchair rugby athletes and greater trunk impairment severity was associated with reduced sports performance, as quantified through the ability to perform chair tilt and acceleration in the first 2 metres of movement (Altmann et al, 2018).…”

“…In 2014, the incidence of CP in Saudi Arabia was 2.5 per 1000 live births, and >200,000 new cases were reported yearly (Aman et al, 2022). CP is a neurological disorder that affects posture and movement (Soliman et al, 2019;Tedla et al, 2019;Dasoju et al, 2021).…”

“…(ii) To evaluate trunk dysfunction, the static sitting balance (TIS-SSB), dynamic sitting balance (TIS-DSB), and trunk coordination (TIS-C) subcomponents of the Trunk Impairment Scale are used. The 17 elements that make up the TIS have three subtotal scores that range from 0 (poor performance) to 23 (excellent performance) (best performance) [ 12 ]. (iii) The Gross Motor Function Measure Scale (GMFCS) categorises a child's present gross motor function objectively.…”
