Proximate composition of Mystus bleekeri in relation to body size and condition factor from Nala Daik, Sialkot, Pakistan

Abstract: Proximate composition of small catfish, Mystus bleekeri, from Nala Daik, Sialkot, Pakistan was investigated and fluctuation in relation to body size and condition factor was carried out. Mean percentages for water, fat, protein and ash contents in the whole wet body weight of wild M. bleekeri were 77.87, 3.26, 15.01 and 3.87%, respectively. Body composition of the fish was effected by body size; however, condition factor remains constant with observed body constituents (% water, fat, protein, ash and organic c… Show more

“…The results of the analysis vary significantly dependent on species, age structure, sexes, habitat, seasons of feeding and physical activities (Aberoumand, 2010). Percentage of protein in fish are typically greater than those of fat (Skalli et al, 2004;Erchao et al, 2010); these arrangements ease the effective exploitation of both body needs (Miller et al, 2005). In fishes, difference in chemical body composition narrates prudently to feed consumption (Oyelese, 2006).…”

“…The quality of food depends on the quantities of nutrients present in it and their bioavailability. Man is interested in healthy food because health is dependent on quality diet (Lie, 2001). Fish is a good source of protein and fish fat is important because it contains n-3 fatty acids (Bennett et al, 2018).…”

“…A wealth of literature is available on body composition of various fish species i.e. Esox lucius (Salam and Davies, 1994), Salmo gairdneri (Grayton and Beamish, 1997), Salmo trutta ( Jonsson and Jonsson, 1998), Salmo salar and Salmo trutta (Berg et al, 2000), Cirrhinus mrigala (Mahboob et al, 2003), Salmo salar (Dempson et al, 2004) Clarias gariepinus (Osibona et al, 2006;Chukwu and Shaba, 2009), Mystus bleekeri (Naeem and Ishtiaq, 2011), Cyprinus carpio, Labeo rohita and Oreochromis mossambicus ( Jabeen and Chaudary, 2011), Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Begum et al, 2012), Seriola dumerili (Abdullah, 2012), Cirrhinus mrigala (Ahmed et al, 2015) and Labeo rohita and C. mrigala by Sikandar et al (2020). However, very little information is known about the body composition Rita rita (Abbas et al, 2013).…”
