Providing variable TXOP for IEEE 802.11e HCCA real-time networks

Abstract: Quality of Service (QoS) provided by the IEEE 802.11e amendment and by the proposed HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) reference scheduler is tailored for Constant Bit Rate traffic streams. Moreover the numerous alternative scheduling algorithms are not suitable to serve Variable Bit Rate (VBR) traffic streams with the required QoS and real-time guarantees. This paper presents Immediate Dynamic TXOP HCCA (IDTH), a new scheduling algorithm based on a bandwidth reclaiming mechanism suitable to cooperate with a … Show more

“…Another approach to handle fluctuating and VBRs is to apply a bandwidth reclaiming scheme. [11][12][13][14] A prediction scheme was proposed, 15 namely, the HCCA scheduler that dynamically modifies the default arbitration inter-frame space number (AIFSN) values with the aim of enhancing the voice and video communications. The prediction scheme is implemented by carrying out the construction of a J48 decision tree classifier.…”

“…This is because, during very low traffic, there is wastage in the channel's bandwidth, and during heavy traffic loads, the network may not be able to provide a QoS guarantee for high-priority traffic. The authors presented the new dynamic TXOP HCCA schedulers in [10][11][12]. These scheduling algorithms work based on a bandwidth-reclaiming scheme that is compatible with the HCCA scheduler.…”
