Abstract:The history and iconography of Swiss stained glass dating between the 16th and 18th centuries are well studied. However, the chemical and morphological characteristics of the glass and glass paints, particularly the nature of the raw materials, the provenance of the glass, and the technology used to produce it are less well understood. In this paper, we studied two sets of samples from stained-glass panels attributed to Switzerland, which date from the 16th to 17th centuries: the first set comes from Pena National Palace collection, the second from Vitrocentre Romont. The aims were to identify the materials used in the production of the glass, to find out more about their production origin and to characterize the glass paints. Both glass and the glass paints were analysed by particle-induced X-ray emission; the paints were additionally analysed by scanning electron microscopy-electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results show that the glass from both sets was probably produced in the same region and that wood ash was used as a fluxing agent. Different recipes have been used to make the blue enamels. However, the cobalt ore used as a coloring agent in all of the blue enamels came from the mining district in Schneeberg, Germany.

Entre os materiais arqueológicos recuperados durante as escavações no Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, foi recolhido, em 2007, um conjunto de vidros, em uma lixeira que se encontrava selada pelos níveis das obras de reestruturação do Paço Episcopal promovidas pelo bispo D. Afonso Castelo-Branco, entre 1585 (data da sua tomada de posse) e 1592. A datação precisa do depósito arqueológico e a feliz circunstância de o seu conteúdo ter sido alvo de análise integral faz com que o estudo deste conjunto vítreo ofereça um excelente ponto de partida para uma abordagem significativa do vidro quinhentista em Portugal. A comparação com este espólio permite uma melhor compreensão de outros fragmentos vítreos, recuperados por ocasião de intervenções antigas levadas a cabo em diferentes locais da cidade, aos quais podemos, a partir de agora, tentar atribuir uma datação correcta.

A set of 14 glass fragments and production remains dated to the 16th and 17th centuries was collected during rescue archaeological works conducted in Granada, Spain, and was characterised by µ-PIXE. This preliminary study constitutes the first analytical approach to glass manufacturing remains from a Spanish production dated to the early-modern period. µ-PIXE allowed for the quantification of major, minor and some trace elements of the glass fragments. It also allowed mapping the elemental distribution on the fragments that were identified as an interface of crucible/glass. This analysis constitutes an evaluation of the ionic exchange between glass and crucible. The glass colours vary from the natural green and blue hues to completely colourless samples. The results show that the majority of the glass samples are of soda-lime-silicate composition, and only one proved to be of a potassium-rich composition. From this, one can hypothesise that glass rich in sodium (following the Mediterranean tradition) and potassium-rich glass (following a central and north European tradition) were both locally produced. Since this location was known as la Calle Horno del Vidrio (Glass Furnace Street) and several production evidences were found, it is highly probable that an artisanal glass production existed in this area.
