Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate the patterns of diversity and abundance of ciliates protozoa community in three tropical urban streams and verify which species can be considered bioindicators of water quality. In each stream, three regions (headwater, middle and mouth) were sampled in two years, in the rainy and dry seasons. The abiotic factors (dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, turbidity, width, depth, flow and conductivity) and biotic factors (total coliforms, bacterioplankton, chlorophyll and… Show more

“…Indirectly we could assume that total coliforms are changing between seasons because our data showed the bacterivorous ciliates decreased in the dry season. Also, Debastiani et al (2016) found a positive correlation between the presence of bacterivorous ciliates and total coliforms. During the dry season, omnivorous ciliates were more frequent than the remaining groups, likely due to the advantages for a wider diet feeding on algae, protists and small metazoan (Foissner and Berger, 1996;Dias and D'Agosto, 2006).…”

“…Moreover, Brachonella sp., Caenomorpha sp. and Plagiopyla nasuta produce gas methane, thus, those ciliates could be used to determinate water quality in Lerma marshes, as in other aquatic ecosystems (Beaver and Crisman, 1989;Foissner and Berger, 1996;Jiang et al, 2011;Tirjaková and Vďačný, 2013;Debastiani et al, 2016).…”

“…The ciliates occur in various kinds of aquatic environments, wherein sufficient nutrients, moisture, and appropriate microhabitats are available (Corliss 2002;Mironova et al 2012). Ciliates are known to be useful to man for many purposes such as the determination of water quality and the description of habitat type within the water column (Debastiani et al 2016;Fenchel 1987;Finlay et al 1997;Foissner 1998;Hou et al 2016;Madoni 2000;Shukla & Gupta 2001;Sivasankar et al 2018). Ciliates with their large size, short life cycle, high reproduction rate and lack of cell wall help in detecting the water, soil quality, and the environmental impacts in a short timescale (Abraham et al 2017;Groliére et al 1990;Somasundaram et al 2019;.…”

“…Even ciliates´ superoxide dismutase exhibited clear heavy metal concentrations-dependent activities .Freshwater ciliates contribute much to the environmental bioremediation from the heavy metals . Ciliates also play a key role in water purification systems (Debastiani et al, 2016 andRadhakrishnan andJayaprakas, 2015).…”
