Protistan microbial observatory in the Cariaco Basin, Caribbean. II. Habitat specialization

Abstract: This is the second paper in a series of three that investigates eukaryotic microbial diversity and taxon distribution in the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, the ocean's largest anoxic marine basin. Here, we use phylogenetic information, multivariate community analyses and statistical richness predictions to test whether protists exhibit habitat specialization within defined geochemical layers of the water column. We also analyze spatio-temporal distributions of protists across two seasons and two geographic sites wi… Show more

“…Nevertheless, there are, as yet, no universally accepted guidelines to this cut-off value, which ranges from 90 to 99 % (e.g. Stoeck et al 2007;Caron et al 2009;Marande et al 2009;Schnetzer et al 2011;Edgcomb et al 2011;Orsi et al 2011). In our study, we used a modified approach with a highly stringent clustering cut-off value of 99 %.…”

“…Caron et al 2009). Indeed, previous studies have explored different cut-off levels ranging from 90 to 100 % (Stoeck et al 2007;Edgcomb et al 2011;Orsi et al 2011;Hadziavdic et al 2014), which is necessary for any new primer set used to amplify a fragment of the 18S rRNA gene. However, to our knowledge, this is the first study using the hierarchical rank approach with environmental DNA data.…”

“…For example, vertically-migrating crustacean, zooplankton, chaetognaths and even fish can seek temporary refuge from predation in low-oxygen regions of OMZs (Wishner et al, 1998(Wishner et al, , 2013Escribano et al, 2009). In addition, diverse communities of phagotrophic and parasitic protists are described from oxygen-depleted and anoxic water columns, many of which exhibit complex relationships with prokaryotes (Lin et al, 2007;Edgcomb et al, 2011;Orsi et al, 2011Orsi et al, , 2012Wright et al, 2012).…”

“…MAST groups were not monophyletic, but formed independent lineages among basal heterotrophic stramenopiles. Twelve MAST groups were first defined (Massana et al, 2004), and seven more were proposed later (Zuendorf et al, 2006;Orsi et al, 2011). Also, a parallel classification was proposed soon after the first study (Richards and Bass, 2005).…”
