Protein enrichment of an Opuntia ficus‐indica cladode hydrolysate by cultivation of Candida utilis and Kluyveromyces marxianus

Abstract: BACKGROUNDThe cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica (prickly pear cactus) have a low protein content; for use as a balanced feed, supplementation with other protein sources is therefore desirable. We investigated protein enrichment by cultivation of the yeasts Candida utilis and Kluyveromyces marxianus in an enzymatic hydrolysate of the cladode biomass.RESULTSDilute acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of sun-dried cladodes resulted in a hydrolysate containing (per litre) 45.5 g glucose, 6.3 g xylose, 9.1 g g… Show more

“…Content of sugars in raw flours was determined by HPLC method, according to Akanni, du Preez, Steyn, and Kilian (2015) using a Dionex-UltiMate 3000 equipment (Thermo Scientific, MA, USA) supplied with a REZEX RPM-Monosaccharide PB+2(8%) column (300 × 7.8 mm). Sugars separation was developed using water as mobile phase at 80°C column temperature and were detected by refractive index.…”

“…Moreover, Candida utilis yeasts have been approved by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as safe for consumption and have been added to the American GRAS list (Generally Recognized as Safe). To this end, this yeast biomass, as well as their metabolites, may be used both in the food industry and in the fodder production [6].…”
