Background 2,3‐butanediol is a chemical component with wide industrial applications, such as biofuels and chemical precursors. Reducing 2,3‐butanediol production costs is a high priority and recent focus has been on its biological synthesis from raw renewable materials rather than through conventional chemical procedures. In this study, a 2,3‐butanediol native bacterial producer was selected for the fermentation of Agave cupreata bagasse waste by enzymatic hydrolysation to obtain 2,3‐butanediol. Results The native Klebsiella oxytoca UM2‐17 strain was selected to efficiently produce 2,3‐butanediol on synthetic mineral media. Using glucose (100 g L−1) and glucose: xylose (50 g L−1:50 g L−1) as sugar sources obtained titres of 29.36 g L−1 and 25.9 g L−1 of 2,3‐butanediol, corresponding to yields of 0.29 g g−1 and 0.26 g g−1, respectively. Agave bagasse solid waste after acid pre‐treatment was utilized to obtain enzymatic hydrolysates, obtaining liquors with glucose/xylose/arabinose at 25.8 g L−1 with efficiency of ∼52.5% sugar conversion from residual solid pre‐hydrolysed bagasse. The production of 2,3‐butanediol through batch fermentation of the enzymatic‐hydrolysate by the UM2‐17 strain showed total depletion of glucose and xylose, achieving a maximal production of 10.3 g L−1 of 2,3‐butanediol plus 0.28 g L−1 ethanol, corresponding to 2,3‐butanediol yield of 0.40 g g−1. Conclusion The results indicate that A. cupreata bagasse waste from mezcal beverage elaboration is a sustainable bioresource for production of 2,3‐butanediol by fermentation of enzymatic bagasse‐hydrolysate using the K. oxytoca UM2‐17 strain. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Species of the genus Prosopis were a major staple food in Aridoamerica before the arrival of Europeans. In the present work, chemical and nutritional properties of Prosopis laevigata pods were described. The composition in weight of pods of P. laevigata was 44% mesocarp, 35% endocarp, and 21% exocarp. Sugars, including sucrose, glucose, fructose, and xylose, were important components of pods, reaching a total sugars content of 447 g/kg in mesocarp flour. Considering the FAO-recommended amino-acid scoring patterns for humans older than 3 years, high values of Lys and sulfur-containing amino acids were found in flours. Thermal treatment of flours increases significantly the phenolic compounds content and free-radical scavenging capacity, an effect associated with the generation of Maillard reaction products. Flours of mesquite pods are a good source of phenolic compounds, with significantly higher free-radical scavenging capacity than soybean and common bean.Caracterización química y nutrimental de harinas crudas y térmicamente tratadas de vainas de Mesquite (Prosopis laevigata) y sus salvados residuales RESUMEN Especies del genero Prosopis fueron alimento importante en Aridoamérica antes de la llegada de los Europeos. En el presente trabajo se describen las propiedades químicas y nutrimentales de vainas de Prosopis laevigata. La composición en peso de las vainas de P. laevigata fue de 21% exocarpio, 44% mesocarpio y 35% endocarpio. Azúcares, incluyendo sacarosa, glucosa, fructosa y xilosa, fueron importantes componentes de la vaina, alcanzando un contenido tota de azúcares de 447 g/kg en harina de mesocarpio. Considerando los valores de aminoácidos recomendados por la FAO para mayores de 3 años, altos valores de Lys y aminoácidos azufrados fueron encontrados en las harinas. El tratamiento térmico de las harinas incrementa significativamente el contenido de compuestos fenólicos y la capacidad captadora de radicales libres, un efecto asociado a la generación de productos de la reacción de Maillard. Las harinas de vaina de mezquite son una buena fuente de compuestos fenólicos, con una capacidad captadora de radicales libres más alta que las semillas de soya y frijol. ARTICLE HISTORY

The aim of this study was to determine the use of glycerol as a source of carbon and the use of deproteinized potato wastewater as a source of nitrogen and mineral components for the production of biomass by fodder yeast Candida utilis. Methods The yeast strain Candida utilis ATCC 9950 was used in this study. Experimental media contained potato wastewater and glycerol at concentrations of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% (w/v). Control medium was YPD and potato wastewater. During the 72 h of cultivation (200 rpm, 28°C), the optical density (spectrophotometric method), biomass yield (weight method), glycerol (chemical method), and protein (Kjeldahl's method) concentration in the experimental media, protein content in the biomass (Kjeldahl's method) and chemical-oxygen demand index (dichromate method) in selected culture media were determined. Results Candida utilis was able to grow in the medium composed of potato wastewater and glycerol. Addition of 5% of glycerol gave a biomass yield above 30 g d.w. /L and the efficiency of protein biosynthesis was 12.2 g/L. The results showed that the cultivation C. utilis in this medium caused a significant reduction of glycerol (83%), nitrogen present in potato wastewater (51%), and a high degree of COD index reduction (91%). Conclusions The study demonstrated that potato wastewater supplemented with glycerol may be successfully used as a carbon source in the production of fodder yeast C. utilis ATCC 9950 biomass. In addition, the results show that these two troublesome industrial wastes could be efficiently used in such processes.
