Protective Effect of Lycopene on Oxidative Stress and Cognitive Decline in Rotenone Induced Model of Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract: Evidence from clinical and experimental studies indicate that oxidative stress is involved in pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. The present study was designed to investigate the neuroprotective potential of lycopene on oxidative stress and neurobehavioral abnormalities in rotenone induced PD. Rats were treated with rotenone (3 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneally) for 30 days. NADH dehydrogenase a marker of rotenone action was observed to be significantly inhibited (35%) in striatum of treated animals. Howe… Show more

“…For the iron-treated group, this diet was supplemented with 1000 mg/kg diet. According to the rat's body weight, animals were intragastric administered lycopene dissolved in corn oil or 0.9% saline solution for 6 weeks (Kaur et al, 2011).…”

“…91 In an animal study, a beneficial effect of lycopene supplementation in rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease was demonstrated. 92 Lycopene showed protective effects against myeloid β-induced neurotoxicity in cultured rat cortical neurons 93 , 3-nitropropionic acid-induced mitochondrial oxidative stress, and dysfunctions in nervous system 94 , and trimethyltin-induced neurotoxicity in primary cultured rat hippocampal neurons. 95 …”
