Protective effect of crocetin from Crocus sativus L. on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Abstract: This study investigated the protective effect of crocetin from Crocus sativus L. on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MORO) in rats. Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into sham-operated, model, and low-, medium-and high-dose crocetin groups. Later 3 groups were intragastrically administrated with 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg crocetin from Crocus sativus L., respectively, for 1 week. Dn the 8th day, the MORO model was established in the later 4 groups. The blood biochemical indexes, hemodynamic indexes, myocardi… Show more

“…Recent years, crocetin showed antioxidant effects to counter the free radicals or oxidative stress and demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects on various animal models 21,22 . CT exert various types of pharmacological effects such as anti-apoptotic, anticancer, heart disease, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects 19,20,23,24 . This effect of CT, especially its capacity to suppress inflammation and oxidative stress, proposes that might be an important candidate to attenuate atherosclerosis.…”

“…Crocetin is the major phytoconstituents of Crocus sativus . It is a plant apocarotenoid with broad biologic potential, such as immunoregulation, antibacterial, anti‐inflammatory, and so on (Li et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2019; Sapanidou et al., 2016; Zhang et al., 2020). Previous research suggests that crocetin has been used against multiple inflammatory diseases, viz., ischemia‐reperfusion and has attained significant effectiveness (Farkhondeh et al., 2018; Li et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2019; Sapanidou et al., 2016; Zhang et al., 2020).…”
