Prostate ultrasound: back in business!

Abstract: The use of grey scale prostate ultrasound decreased after the implementation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis and evaluation of prostate cancer. The new developments, such as multiparametric ultrasound and MRI-ultrasound fusion technology, renewed the interest for this imaging method in the assessment of prostate cancer. The purpose of this paper was to review the current role of prostate ultrasound in the setting of these new applications. A thorough reevaluation of the selection criteria… Show more

“…If the puncture position is determined only by the inguinal skin crease or palpation, the position may be inappropriate (often too low). Confirm the puncture site with fluoroscopy (femoral head) or ultrasound (bifurcation) guidance to avoid misplacement [18,29,35,36].…”

“…Systematic biopsy is the standard procedure for the diagnosis of PCa and represents the sampling of the posterior area of the prostate, where PCa most frequently develops. The main drawback of this procedure is that the ultrasound (US) guidance fails to identify PCa, thus the biopsy is performed in a blind manner according to a preestablished scheme (12). The advent of prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lead to a change in the diagnosis of PCa, allowing for the first time to identify lesions potentially harboring malignant disease (13).…”

“…Visualization of the common carotid, internal carotid, external carotid and of the vertebral arteries was attempted in both sagittal and transverse plans. Measurements were performed with the ultrasound beam intersecting the flow stream as close to an angle of 60 degrees as possible [9]. Our technologists, at their discretion, took measures to minimize aliasing by either shifting the frequency baseline in a given direction or by activating a higher duplex PRF mode [10].…”
