Despite the trend of a transition to “clean” energy, the coal industry still plays a significant role in the global economy. The constant need for raw materials and energy for production leads to an environmental crisis—an increase in the content of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, especially in the mining regions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the carbon footprint on the environment and to study ways to reduce the negative impact of coal mining enterprises on the ecology. To analyze the chosen topic, the available reviews and research articles on the impact of the carbon footprint of coal mining enterprises, and the ways to reduce it and restore the biodiversity of wastelands, were used. It was found out that a complete ban on the extraction and use of coal in the industry will not lead to the desired result. The main ways to reduce the negative impact of coal mining enterprises on the environment were considered. The most promising direction for reducing the carbon footprint is the restoration of the vegetation cover by phytoremediation methods and the creation of carbon landfills in reclaimed territories in technogenically polluted coal mining regions.

This research evaluates the development of microbiomes in primary soils, forming in various mining dumps in the arid terrain in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. A metagenomic analysis of the communities was performed by sequencing extended gene sequences. The evaluation of the agro-chemical properties was in accordance with conventional pedology methods. Inverse voltammetry was used to measure the heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, zinc, copper, and nickel) and arsenic content. In all the samples studied, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria phylas dominated, and, in smaller numbers, Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes were present. In the natural samples, the proportion of Actinobacteria was higher, and the proportions of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were lower than in the samples from anthropogenically disrupted soils. Verrucomicrobia bacteria and Thaumarchaeota archaea were not found in the forming soils of the Kulyurtau and Tubinsky quarries, although in all other samples, there was a significant content of representatives of these types. Soil formation was observed at the Kulyurtau and Tubinsky mines, with a self-restoration period of more than 30 years. The microbial communities of the forming soils were similar in species richness to the background soils, and the alpha diversity showed a high level of dispersion, although the beta diversity had a different clustering, but the absence of Verrucomicrobia and Thaumarchaeota phyla in the samples from both sites indicates the underdevelopment of new soils compared with the natural background. Agrochemical indicators showed a dependence on the type of growing vegetation and the degree of anthropogenic load, and the correlation with the microbial composition of soils was traced poorly.

Heavy metal pollution has become a serious concern across the globe due to their persistent nature, higher toxicity, and recalcitrance. These toxic metals threaten the stability of the environment and the health of all living beings. Heavy metals also enter the human food chain by eating contaminated foods and cause toxic effects on human health. Thus, remediation of HMs polluted soils is mandatory and it needs to be addressed at higher priority. The use of microbes is considered as a promising approach to combat the adverse impacts of HMs. Microbes aided in the restoration of deteriorated environments to their natural condition, with long-term environmental effects. Microbial remediation prevents the leaching and mobilization of HMs and they also make the extraction of HMs simple. Therefore, in this context recent technological advancement allowed to use of bioremediation as an imperative approach to remediate polluted soils. Microbes use different mechanisms including bio-sorption, bioaccumulation, bioleaching, bio-transformation, bio-volatilization and bio-mineralization to mitigate toxic the effects of HMs. Thus, keeping in the view toxic HMs here in this review explores the role of bacteria, fungi and algae in bioremediation of polluted soils. This review also discusses the various approaches that can be used to improve the efficiency of microbes to remediate HMs polluted soils. It also highlights different research gaps that must be solved in future study programs to improve bioremediation efficency.
