Prospects of orphan crops in climate change

Abstract: Main conclusion Orphan crops can contribute to building resilience of marginal cropping systems as a climate chnage adaptation strategy. Orphan crops play an important role in global food and nutrition security, and may have potential to contribute to sustainable food systems under climate change. Owing to reports of their potential under water scarcity, there is an argument to promote them to sustainably address challenges such as increasing drought and water scarcity, food and nutrition… Show more

“…Recent studies based on compiled data from 53 countries with serious, alarming, or seriously alarming conditions clearly show that more than 50% (27 countries) had decreased consumed calories due to mean climate change (Ray et al, 2019). Although the productivity of major crops has been predicted to be lower under marginal environments, the good news is that the nutrient-rich underused neglected crops are very resilient to harsh environments (drought, salinity, and extreme temperature) and yield well with limited resources (Mabhaudhi et al, 2019). As per FAO estimates (FAO, 2017), most of the food needed for 2 billion more mouths by 2050 has to come from marginal environments.…”

“…So-called orphan crops are underutilized species that have local significance, especially for small-scale farmers, but are neglected on a global scale (Mabhaudhi et al 2019). They are often overlooked by researchers, despite valuable traits that are promising for emerging markets (Tadele 2019).…”

“…With varying diet regimes among the urban communities especially those in developed nations, the challenge of fulfilling consumer needs and demands becomes bigger than ever [90][91][92]. Many researchers today would agree that the development of underutilized crops that feed only certain communities is equally important as the improvement of common staple crops such as rice that feed the majority [72,93,94]. This perhaps explains why the research on underutilized crops gained momentum in the current era.…”
