Prospective study of histopathological patterns of ovarian tumours in a tertiary care centre

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONOvarian tumours account for 3% of all cancers in females, being the second most common cancer of the female genital tract, next only to uterine cancer.1 They account for 30% of all cancers of the female genital tract.2 Ovarian tumours often go undetected and present at a later stage. This is due to their location, lack of early screening modalities and, lack of specific symptoms and signs suggestive of malignant nature. The advanced stage at presentation of ovarian cancers results in a low mean 5 y… Show more

“…Benign surface epithelial tumors were the commonest type (81.17%) followed by malignant surface epithelial tumour (15.88%) comparable to other studies 12,16,27 but with more borderline ovarian tumors 26(7.64%) similar to Mondal. 26 The suface epithelial tumours are subtyped into serous, mucinous, transitional, clear cell, endometroid types.…”

“…4 Due to their location, lack of regular screening and lack of specific symptoms, ovarian tumour often go undetected until they attain large size and present at a later age. 5 The nature of ovarian cystic lesions is difficult to determine by clinical examination and even on surgical exploration. As the management and prognosis mainly depend on the histological type and the grade of the tumor, it is mandatory to find out the origin and the type of tumor by doing thorough histopathological examination.…”
