Introduction: Lump in breast is a common complaint in surgical practice. The lesions of the breast have diverse aetiology and presentation may range from a benign tumour, cyst or a malignancy. The diagnostic methods for palpable breast lumps should be rapid, inexpensive, most accurate and least invasive to evaluate and distinguish between benign and malignant lumps in outpatient clinics. Thus, patients are more compliant and surgeons can be more certain about the definitive management. Aims and Objectives: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC and TRUCUT biopsy in screening of palpable breast lumps by taking histopathological reports as gold standard. Materials and Methods: It is a Diagnostic validity test, undertaken in the department of surgery in a tertiary care centre. Data collection was done by extensive history taking, clinical examination, FNAC, TRUCUT biopsy and post-operative histopathology. Results: Study was conducted on 145 patients. Out of the total, 99 (68.3%) reports were benign pathologies; fibroadenoma (61.6%) was the most common, while 46 (31.7%) were malignant pathologies and intra-ductal carcinoma was the most common (40 out of 46 cases; 88.9%). Overall diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was 93.1%, whereas that of TRUCUT biopsy was 96.6%. Conclusion: We thus conclude that both FNAC and TRUCUT biopsy are accurate methods in breast diagnostic practice. The methods are complementary and depend on the skill and experience of the individuals performing the sampling and interpretation. The clinicians should also know the advantages and disadvantages of both the procedures to decide accordingly.

BACKGROUNDThe objectives of the study are-1) To evaluate the histopathological findings of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of breast. 2) To correlate the clinico-radiological diagnoses and histopathological diagnoses. MATERIALS AND METHODSThe present study was conducted in the Pathology Department of MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand over a period of three years from January 2014 to December 2016. During this period, we have studied total 300 cases of breast lesions. Detailed gross examination of biopsy materials was done followed by fixation and tissue processing. Different lesions were studied by histopathological examination and reported. RESULTSOut of the 300 cases, 290 cases had neoplastic and 10 cases had non-neoplastic lesions. Out of the total 290 cases with neoplastic, 202 cases had benign breast tumours, 88 cases had malignant lumps. Fibroadenoma was the most common benign tumour with 147 cases. Invasive ductal carcinoma (NOS) was the most common malignant tumour with 73 cases. Most common nonneoplastic lesion was acute mastitis/abscess with 04 cases followed by duct ectasia and fibrocystic disease of breast. The tumours involved were in upper outer quadrant most frequently. The benign tumours were most frequent in 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th decades. The malignant tumours were seen beyond 4 th decade. CONCLUSIONHistopathological study is still gold standard, not only for its diagnostic role but also its prognostic value. It is also important in the management of breast lumps.

Introduction: The objective of the study was to compare the findings of cytological and histopathological features of breast lesions. Methods: This study conducted on 109 patients with breast lump with fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) followed by histopathology at Department of Pathology, Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences, Umarda, Udaipur, Rajasthan. The study duration is 18-month study period (April 2021 to September 2022). Results: The mean age of the study subjects was 44.20 years with majority of the patients belonged to the age group 41–50 years (36.70%). Out of 109 cases, 84 cases (77.07%) were benign and 23 cases (21.10%) were malignant pathology in FNAC. Rest two cases had intermediate pathology. Majority of histopathological diagnosis of breast lumps in the present study were benign pathology (75.23%) and rest all malignant (24.77%). Conclusion: Our study shows that FNAC can reliably distinguish between benign and malignant conditions and it is a sensitive and specific modality that assist in diagnosis and management of breast lesions. Although FNAC has been found to be a most valuable economic, simple, and safe diagnostic procedure, due to certain pitfall of FNAC like in case of pauci-cellularity blood mixed aspirates and blind technique procedure. Histopathological correlation is always mandatory for early diagnosis and better prognosis.
