“…For substances such as tert-butylhydroxytoluene (BHT), which produces forestomach tumours by non-genotoxic mechanisms, it is believed that the tumours produced are of little relevance for humans, at least at low doses. 28,29 In the case of the genotoxic compounds BAP and PAH it is plausible to expect BAP to cause tumours of the gastrointestinal tract also in humans. Apart from forestomach tumours, in the study of Culp et al 10 BAP produced tumours of the tongue, oesophagus and larynx, therefore it seems reasonable to include forestomach tumours in the potency estimation.…”

“…Propionate can be produced by succinic acid, acrylate, or propylene glycol pathways. After absorption by the colon, propionate enters the liver through the portal vein and is subsequently metabolized by liver cells to participate in the process of reversal of pyruvate into glucose (Harrison 1992 ). A study using a reactor system that mimics the large intestine environment and enables maintaining stable bacterial communities has found that the addition of brewer's YCW dramatically increased the amounts of acetate and propionate induced by Megasphaella and Veillonella (Nakashimada et al.…”

“…Glycerol and propylene glycol are fermented in vitro and altered to propionic acid. In vivo, propanoic acid is converted into glucose, which serves as energy for the animal (Bergman, 1990; Francisco et al, 2002; Rémond et al, 1993), and propanoic acid also has antibacterial and preservative activities (Harrison, 1992). Therefore, we suggest that propanoic acid may become an energy source for spermatozoa and acts as an antimicrobial component in the seminal plasma, favouring post‐thawing characteristics of sperm.…”
