Properties of Seaweed Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene Composite: Effect of Alkaline Treatment

Abstract: Natural fibers are favored to use as raw resources in making reinforced polymer composite because they are abundant and inexpensive. However, natural fiber-reinforced composites are suggested to be treated to improve their qualities before being employed in the production of composites. The seaweed fibers are treated with an alkaline medium in this study. Alkaline treatment of seaweed/polypropylene (SW/PP) composites is expected to increase their physical and mechanical qualities. Extrusion and hot-pressing pr… Show more

“…The mechanical and physical qualities of these natural fibers were also impressive. Due to their abundance and low cost, which reduced maintenance costs, researchers claimed that natural fibers are more cost-effective in terms of raw materials than synthetic fibers [1] [2]. Despite this, the widespread use of kenaf fibres in composites faces numerous obstacles.…”

“…In comparison to homogeneous materials such as fiberglass, natural fibres have a lower tensile strength due to their higher irregularity. However, their commercial application is unaffected by the fact that biodegradable materials have weaker mechanical qualities than synthetic materials because natural fibres are considerably less expensive than synthetic fibres [7].…”
