Promises and challenges of high-energy vortex states collisions

Igor P. Ivanov

Abstract: Vortex states of photons, electrons, and other particles are non-plane-wave solutions of the corresponding wave equation with helicoidal wave fronts. These states possess an intrinsic orbital angular momentum with respect to the average propagation direction, which represents a new degree of freedom, previously unexplored in particle or nuclear collisions.Vortex states of photons, electrons, neutrons, and neutral atoms have been experimentally produced, albeit at low energies, and are being intensively explore… Show more

“…Structured wave functions of light, electrons, and atoms have become widely used scientific tools (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). A general class of structured wave functions is indexed by orbital angular momentum (OAM) (14)(15)(16)(17)(18), in which the wave function varies as e iš“ļ¦ , where š“ is the OAM value and the angle ļ¦ describes the azimuth around the propagation vector.…”

“…Twisted photons, which are the excitations of a quantum electromagnetic field with given projections of the total angular momentum different from their helicity, provide a promising tool for parallel signal coding in (quantum) telecommunication [1][2][3]. They can also be used in optical tweezers and in manipulating of rotational degrees of freedom of nano-particles, molecules, atoms, and nuclei [1,[4][5][6][7]. As for detection of twisted photons in the optical range, at the present moment there are elaborated techniques allowing one to decompose an almost arbitrary electromagnetic wave in terms of twisted photons even at a single photon level [8][9][10][11].…”
