Prolonged Vitamin C Supplementation and Recovery from Demanding Exercise

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether 2 weeks of vitamin C supplementation affects recovery from an unaccustomed bout of exercise. Sixteen male subjects were allocated to either a placebo (P; n = 8) or vitamin C group (VC; n = 8). The VC group consumed 200 mg of ascorbic acid twice a day, whereas the P group consumed identical capsules containing 200 mg of lactose. “…Thompson ve ark., 90 dakikalık aralıklı mekik koşu egzersizinde uzun süreli C vitamini kullanımının katılımcılarda orta seviyede pozitif etki sağladığını kaydetmişlerdir. 55 Benzer şe-kilde Kawanishi ve ark., kurkumin (zerdeçalın içinde bulunan antioksidan madde) ilavesinin, yokuş aşağı koşu egzersizlerinde meydana gelen kas hasarını ve oksidatif stresi azalttığını göstermişler-dir. 66 Eksantrik aktivitelerden iki hafta önce ve aktiviteden sonra dört gün boyunca uygulanan yüksek doz (3 g/gün) C vitamini takviyesinin kas hasarını azalttığı, antioksidan kapasiteyi artırdığı ve KK seviyesindeki artışı geciktirdiği saptanmış-tır.…”

“…The concentration of creatine kinase and myoglobin was not altered by supplementation. However, supplementation attenuated muscle pain, benefiting from the recovery of muscle function [16]. In another study, Thompson et al investigated the effect of post-exercise vitamin C supplementation on the recovery from the performance of an intense, prolonged and unusual workout.…”
