Progressive cribriform and zosteriform hyperpigmentation

Abstract: Five cases of progressive cribriform and zosteriform hyperpigmentation are described. The following criteria were fulfilled: (1) uniformly tan cribriform macular pigmentation in a zosteriform distribution; (2) a histologic pattern that consisted of a mild increase in melanin pigment in the basal cell layer and complete absence of nevus cells; (3) no history of rash, injury, or inflammation to suggest postinflammatory hyperpigmentation; (4) onset well after birth with gradual extension; and (5) lack of other as… Show more

“…In agreement with Quecedo et al [5], we believe that a wide spectrum of the disease exists between the diffuse congenital or perinatal forms of Kalter et al [1]and the acquired and segmental forms of Rower et al [4]. Our patient presents clear analogies with the one described by Bjorngren and Holst in 1990 [7].…”

“…Rower et al 1 reported 5 patients with pigmentary abnormalities with certain characteristics in common that constituted the diagnostic criteria for PCZH. These characteristics were uniform and cribriform brown macular hyperpigmentation with a zosteriform distribution; a his- tologic pattern consistent with a mild increase in melanin pigment in cells of the basal layer and complete absence of nevus cells; no history of rash, injury, or inflammation that could suggest postinflammatory hyperpigmentation; onset after birth with gradual increase in extension; and absence of other cutaneous or internal abnormalities.…”
