Progress towards a multi-modal capsule endoscopy device featuring microultrasound imaging

Abstract: Abstract-Current clinical standards for endoscopy in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract combine high definition optics and ultrasound imaging to view the lumen superficially and through its thickness. However, these instruments are limited to the length of an endoscope and the only clinically available, autonomous devices able to travel the full length of the GI tract easily offer only video capsule endoscopy (VCE). Our work seeks to overcome this limitation with a device ("Sonopill") for multimodal capsule endos… Show more

“…These early results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed patient pathway. Further work is now in progress to combine diverse capabilities in single capsules, notably VCE combined with μUS imaging [ 6 , 7 ] for diagnosis and fluorescence imaging with UmTDD for therapy.…”

“…A means for improving diagnosis and ultimately treatment is to combine multiple diagnostic and therapeutic (i.e., theranostic) modalities. Sonopill [ 6 , 7 ] is an example of a multimodal capsule which aims to combine US imaging with other diagnostic modalities such as video imaging, fluorescence imaging [ 8 ] and pH sensing. In addition, therapeutic capsule endoscopy (TCE) devices are also under development, an example being SonoCAIT [ 9 , 10 ], a capsule endoscopy (CE) device containing UmTDD components, discussed in detail in Section 4.3 .…”

“…However, this leads to concerns about thermal behavior. To address these, trial capsules were designed and manufactured to determine a viable power budget [22]. These capsules used a set of external thermistors and internal temperature sensors to determine the heating caused by various currents flowing through a power resistor.…”

“…Once the porcine model had been established, preliminary translational trials were undertaken with a set of tethered ultrasound capsules which were previously developed [10], featuring four 30 MHz PVDF single element transducers and an internal receive amplification circuit comprising 4 channel transmit/receive protection (MD0101, Microchip Technology, Chandler, USA) and operation amplifiers (ADA4807, Analog Devices, Norwood, USA) set for 12 dB of gain. Multiple identical capsules were prepared prior to the trials, with 2 capsules being used in the final experiment.…”
